Counting contemporary prog-rock outfits Röyksopp, OSI, and Sigur Rós among their influences, Ottawa art-rock six-piece PONY GIRL arose out of the ashes of the now-defunct U of O-based group HOT SHOT CASINO, and now finds itself in iM’s October 2013 Featured Artist spot.
Their eight-song debut Show Me Your Fears (released at the end of September this year) mixes folk, rock, swing, jazz, house, and electronic elements to evoke a cinematic ambiance that wouldn’t have been out of place on an early Peter Gabriel-era GENESIS record, but with a mastering/production polish akin to some of their much larger contemporaries.
Some have said the songs on the release don’t work as well individually when compared to the full-album experience, but we’ll leave you to be the judge – check it out along with a video for non-album track Ivory in the embeds below.
PONY GIRL plays a stacked bill with iM at Measure later this month with fellow Pop Drone collective duo DIALOOG, and Toronto rockers BASTARD SUNSHINE and ROTARY DIAL.
